Tile Finish

Choose The Finish You Want.

GLOSS FINISH VS MATTE FINISH TILES: WHICH IS BEST FOR ME?

Choosing the right tile for your new construction or remodeling project can be an overwhelming process. Not only do you have to consider the color, texture, aesthetic, and type of material the tile is made of, you must choose which type of finish. There are two basic kinds of tile finish: matte and gloss. There are differences between the two; therefore, the sales and service team at Tile Source of Dalton Georgia has provided the following guide to help you decide which finish is best for you.

GLOSS VS MATTE FINISH TILE: THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE

The basic difference between gloss and matte finish tiles has to do with the materials that are used in the manufacturing process. Matte and gloss finish tiles have different levels smoothness and shine. On one hand, gloss finish tiles have a glazed coating. This glaze is made from liquid glass. As a result, it reflects more light and is lustrous and smooth. On the other hand, matte finish tiles dull and somewhat textured. Matte finish tiles do not contain liquid glass and are not glazed. Consequently, matte and gloss finish tiles have their pros and cons, particularly when it comes to the areas they are used in.

Gloss Finish Characteristics

As a result of the mirror-like sheen, gloss finished tiles work well in kitchens. Light bounces off of the glassy finish easily, and it reflects all around the space they are used in. Therefore, gloss finish tiles can make small kitchens look bigger. In fact, they can make any small space appear much larger. The smooth surface is easy to clean with sponges or a damp mop, yet the highly reflective surface picks up finger- and footprints easily. Gloss finishes also become slippery very easily.

MATTE FINISH CHARACTERISTICS

Unlike gloss finish tiles, matte finish tiles are slightly textured and are slip-resistant. Matte finish tiles absorb light, and are great for small bathrooms that have plenty of mirrors or even large kitchens where there is plenty of space and light. Unlike gloss finish tiles, matte finish tiles are easy to maintain. They do not pick up dirt and stains as easy as gloss finishes do. Therefore, they are good for busy areas with lots of traffic. Also, don’t forget that about semi-gloss finishes. These types of finishes work well in neutral areas that get moderate amounts of traffic and light.
